2012 MRDA Championships Preview: #8 Mass Maelstrom

2012 MRDA Championships Preview: #8 Mass Maelstrom

By James Brains

Though they were the last team to punch their ticket to St. Louis, Missouri for MRDA Championships, the Mass Maelstrom competed and won the most games of any team to qualify for men’s roller derby’s top tournament. The team from Lancaster, Mass. participated in thirteen MRDA-sanctioned bouts this season and won nine of them. Maelstrom earned their first trip to MRDA Champs with a breakout showing at the Mohawk Valley Cup in August. They took second place in the eight-team tournament and beat then #7 Race City.

“My favorite moment this season was our rematch against Race City at the Mohawk Valley Cup,” Mass Maelstrom’s Stryker said. “Their entire team is full of talented skaters and they play a really tight game. It’s really challenging and fun to play against them. Our loss to them at Spring Roll was disappointing for me because I felt like we played a sloppy game. I knew if we got another game against them we could take them.”

Teammate Zed enjoyed the Mohawk Valley Cup for a different reason. “One of my favorite moments of the 2012 season was the huge outpouring of help and love I received from the derby community after I broke my leg at the Mohawk Valley Cup,” Zed said. Zed remains confident and focused on returning to the track in time for MRDA Champs despite his major setback: “My preparation for Champs involves resting, healing, eating properly, and exercise. I’m hoping for a swift recovery to be able to play!”

Stryker is able to take a more active approach to his training: “I’m eating better and hitting the gym a bit more frequently. I take competition and team play very seriously. I refuse to let Maelstrom down by becoming fatigued during a game. As a team, Maelstrom is bumping up our practice time from one two-hour practice per week to two two-hour practices. We’re also reviewing bout footage and talking out game theory.”

Both Zed and Stryker would like a shot at the Magic City Misfits. “Although the seeding makes it fairly unlikely, I would love to skate against Magic City,” Stryker said. “When I watched Championships last year and saw how they played, it opened my eyes to an entirely new concept of how to play roller derby. They have some of the best skaters I’ve ever seen play the game. I feel like we would learn a lot playing them.”

So, what can we expect to see from Mass Maelstrom at the MRDA Championships? “From the start of our season Maelstrom went out to not only win but to make our games enjoyable to watch as a fan. We refuse to play ‘stroller derby’ and have gotten away from using pace-lines to rack up points on power jams. We go out every game to PLAY the game, not to stand around for two minutes not doing anything. We love and appreciate all the support our fans give us, and the least we can do in return is play the game they’ve come to see.”

Mass Maelstrom take on undefeated #1-seed Your Mom Men’s Derby at 9am, Saturday, October 20th in the first bout of the tournament. Both Zed and Maelstrom jammer Peter Rottentail are excited to face off against Your Mom. “I believe the harder the opponent the more you learn,” Rottentail said. “I skated in toe plugs for the past 2 years. After seeing (Your Mom blocker) Seahorses Forever at Spring Roll, I decided to put toe stops back on. They have been my best friend ever since.”

You can expect to see fast, action-packed old-school roller derby in this bout as both teams play a very “no nonsense” game. The Maelstrom will likely be over-matched skill-wise by a Your Mom teams that features world-champion speed skaters. Keep an eye out for Maelstrom’s No Big Deal and Jack Hammer’d winners of the Mohawk Valley Cup’s Jammer MVP and Blocker MVP, respectively.

Tickets are still available for the MRDA Championships “Gateway to the Best.” Visit Brown Paper Tickets for more information. And, keep your browser refreshed at MRDA for more team profiles and interviews.

MRDA Now Expands to 25 Leagues

MRDA Now Expands to 25 Leagues

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 25,2012 – The Men’s Roller Derby Association is proud to announce the addition of five new member leagues. Arizona Men’s Derby, Carolina Wreckingballs, Deep Valley Belligerents, Green Bay Smackers, and Tampa Bay Men’s Roller Derby have all passed the application process and were approved by MRDA’s member leagues. MRDA now boasts 25 teams as it continues in its mission to grow men’s roller derby.

The new teams provide MRDA representation in key areas of the country:

Arizona Men’s Derby is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in April of 2011, Arizona, under the name Phoenix Rattleskates, has competed all over the Southwest from Los Angeles to Dallas.

The Carolina Wreckingballs were established in July of 2011. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, they will be a welcome addition to the Southeast.

The Deep Valley Belligerents of Mendocino County, California are a force to be reckoned with. Founded in March of 2011, they already have victories over current MRDA leagues.

The Green Bay Smackers have been around since November of 2010. They have shown solid performances against MRDA leagues Race City and Rock City. The Smackers are Wisconsin’s first team.

Tampa Bay Men’s Roller Derby has come a long way in a short time. Established in September of last year, Tampa Bay has already developed a good-natured rivalry with fellow new MRDA league Carolina

Wreckingballs.

These new leagues represent the biggest jump in MRDA membership since it’s inception in 2007. As member leagues, they will have full voting rights within the MRDA and will shape the future of men’s roller derby. Member leagues also have access to MRDA insurance and are eligible to compete for a spot at the MRDA Championships, men’s roller derby’s top tournament.

Congratulations to all the newest leagues!

MRDA to Promote This Is How I Roll

MRDA to Promote This Is How I Roll

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

5/8/2012  – Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) proudly supports the documentary This Is How I Roll. For the past four years, the This Is How I Roll production team followed the growth of men’s derby and the birth of MRDA. And now, MRDA is excited for the May 10th premiere of the story of men’s roller derby.

This Is How I Roll follows men’s roller derby from its rocky beginnings with the first bout between the New York Shock Exchange and Pioneer Valley Roller Derby in front of jeers from fans to its present day (still sometimes reluctant) acceptance within the roller derby community. As the film’s website says, there are 25,000+ roller derby players in the world. 98% of those are women. This Is How I Roll is about the other 2%.

MRDA is proud to have so many of its members play starring roles in This Is How I Roll. MRDA President Erich “Dr. Spankenstein” Bennar, world-renowned men’s derby skater Mo “Quadzilla” Sanders, Shock Exchange’s “Jonathan R” Rockey, and others who were instrumental in the development of men’s flat track roller derby describe the apprehension and mistrust among members of the more-established women’s derby community.

Through its accessibility to filmgoers with no roller derby experience and its honesty in portraying men’s roller derby, This Is How I Roll aligns itself with MRDA’s mission to enhance the roller derby community and grow the sport no matter what the gender of the participants.

Thus, it is with great honor that MRDA strongly recommends This Is How I Roll to roller derby fans and to people who know nothing about the sport. MRDA encourages all to attend the world premiere at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival on May 10th. Also, keep an eye on the This Is How I Roll Facebook page for future screenings.

NYSE Top the Initial 2012 MRDA Rankings

New York Shock Exchange Top the Initial 2012 MRDA Rankings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

4/9/2012 – The MRDA has released its first rankings of the 2012 season and the first rankings since the 2011 Championship. All of the movement in the rankings reflects the top six teams’ performances at the Championship with no movement in the 7 through 11 spots. The biggest mover was the St. Louis GateKeepers, who fell from the #1 spot to #4 after their fourth-place showing at Championships. The New York Shock Exchange moved up from #2 to the top spot after beating the Puget Sound Outcasts, who now reside at #2, in the championship bout. The previous rankings are available here.

There were no new teams in the rankings this time, but that is sure to change now that the MRDA has more teams than ever competing to be ranked. As it continues in its mission to grow men’s roller derby, the MRDA has nearly doubled to 20 teams in the past year.

In the coming months, two tournaments will give these new teams an opportunity to break into the rankings. The Spring Roll Invitational hosted by the Fort Wayne Derby Girls takes place May 12th and 13th and will feature 13 MRDA leagues. And on June 9th and 10th, the Puget Sound Outcasts host Throwdown in the Sound for which they are still accepting applications.

These tournaments and many upcoming MRDA bouts will help determine who will compete for the 2012 MRDA Championships. The top eight finishers in the end-of-season rankings will receive invitations to compete in the October 20th and 21st event hosted by the St. Louis GateKeepers.
