MRDA Welcomes 2 new members leagues – Helsinki Coast Quads, Finland and Track’Association, France

The Men’s Roller Derby Association adds a further two teams to their European this month – that’s four in total for June! Join us in welcoming Finland’s Helsinki Coast Quads and French team, Track’Association.

Helsinki Coast Quads, Finland

English:

Formed in July 2017, Helsinki Coast Quads are Helsinki’s only men’s roller derby league. They made their first trip overseas late last year to the Men’s European Cup, and although they faced strong opposition, came away with a significant amount of experience, especially for their newer players.
“We went there as a team and came back as a stronger team” said team captain Bilbo Blockins

This year HCQ became Finland’s first ever Men’s National Champions. They won all four games in a two round series against Kouvola Concrete Threat and Tampere Rollin’ Bros. Later this year they have exciting games coming up at ‘November Pain’ in Kiel, Germany.

Asked about the MRDA membership, their captain had this to say: “This is an exciting new chapter for us. We have felt the love and competition from the organization already from the outside and can’t wait what is in store for us as full-fledged members.”

Finnish:

MRDA on innoissaan voidessaan julkistaa kaksi uutta jäsenseuraa. Heinäkuussa 2017 perustettu Helsinki Coast Quads on Helsingin ainoa miesten sarjaa pelaava roller derby -seura. He tekivät ensimmäisen ulkomaan pelimatkansa viime vuoden lopulla Men’s European Cuppiin.
, kertoo joukkueen kapteeni Bilbo Blockins.

Tänä vuonna HCQ:sta tuli kautta aikojen ensimmäinen miesten Suomen mestari. He voittivat kaikki neljä otteluaan kaksinkertaisessa sarjassa, jossa heitä vastassa olivat Kouvola Concrete Threat ja Tampere Rollin’ Bros. Tämän vuoden lopulla HCQ suuntaa November Pain -turnaukseen Saksan Kieliin, jossa heille on luvassa jännittäviä pelejä.

Kysyttäessä MRDA-jäsenyydestä joukkueen kapteeni sanoi seuraavaa: “Tämä on jännittävä uusi seikkailu meille. Olemme saaneet osamme järjestön rakkaudesta ja kilpailullisuudesta jo ulkopuolelta, joten emme malta odottaa mitä tuleman pitää kun olemme.”

Track’Association, France

English:

Track’Association team was created in January 2013 beginning as a regrouping of players from three French cities, before establishing themselves in the university town of Tours a few years ago. Since then they have continued to grow and gain experience, the hard work has certainly paid off – last year they placed third in the French Championships Elite division.

Known for their good humour, they tell MRDA “We are more than a team, we are family!”. Track’ass say that they are proud to be joining the organisation and are looking forward to growing further:

“Being MRDA is a great pride and a culmination after years of progress and sweats. We hope to make the French derby shine through France and beyond. The team takes on a new dimension with higher and higher goals. But beware, we are formidable and solid in party, for the game it can be discussed! And as our war cry says: Who let the Track’mens out? Woof woof woof!!

French:

Who let the Track’mens out? Woof woof woof woof woof woof !!!”

MRDA continues to go from strength to strength across the globe and we’re thrilled to announce the latest addition to the organisation.

MadRiders Men’s Roller Derby, Spain

English:

MadRiders Men’s Roller Derby from Madrid, Spain were founded in 2015 and are Madrid’s first and only men’s roller derby league. They attended MEC last year and have two important Spanish tournaments this year to look forward to. The Madriders hope their new MRDA membership will entice other leagues to visit and play them in Madrid.

We would like to emphasise the hard work and constant effort from all our team’s players to make this possible. It has been a long journey and we can’t wait to play at the top level. But this is just the beginning. Be ready, MRDA Teams, because MadRiders have now come to rock it!!! – Adrien Bloody, Captain.

Orcet Roller Derby, France

English:

Formed in January 2013, The Wolfgang skate as part of Orcet Roller Derby and are located near Clermont-Ferrand in Rhône-Alpes Auvergne, France. Boasting previous coaches such as Team France’s physical trainer, Boulard and international Jammer, Pépé Le Punch, they are currently coached by Léasticoach [ça fait riche]. Wolfgang face tough opponents in the french elite competition, ranking among the top eight in the country; they are also proud to have international skaters who play for France and Italy. A notable highlight of their calendar is Lager du Track, a six-team, weekend long tournament that they hold annually.

“We are so proud to join the MRDA’s team – it’s an honor to be the fourth French team to join the elite” Orcet told us, before adding, “However, don’t be wrong, we don’t come to make tourism – but to challenge all the teams that we will meet – from the beginning the team was created with the objective to join the MRDA – now let’s have fun!!…Do you hear that noise? It is the howl of the hungry pack that is impatient to meet you. ..”

MRDWC to join MRDA in new agreement

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The MRDA and Men’s Roller Derby World Cup (MRDWC) are taking our relationship to the next level! Following extensive discussions between the boards of both organisations, and receiving majority support from their associated member bases, MRDWC will join the MRDA by 2020.

There is much work ahead of both organisations, but thanks to the close relationships forged since the creation of the MRDWC the process is expected to be smooth. Discussions will continue in order to facilitate a project timeline that allows for a full analysis of the MRDWC becoming part of the MRDA. MRDA Board of Directors will guide the formation of a dedicated workgroup, ensuring that MRDA members will continue to have a say in the future of their Association.

The first MRDWC was held in Birmingham, UK in 2014. Teams from 15 countries competed, viewers from all 7 continents watched, yes, that includes Antarctica. 2016 saw the MRDWC descend on Cowtown – Calgary, Alberta Canada. The event continued to grow, with 20 teams competing and total viewers across the world exceeding 27,000. In 2018 the event was held in Barcelona, 24 teams competed and the next event in St Louis is set to be even bigger.

MRDWC is proud of its support of gender diversity, particularly when it comes to officiating. At every event, the majority of Tournament Heads have not identified as male. MRDWC has even seen 3 wedding proposals, including one during the halftime break of the championship game.

The MRDA has supported the event since its inception, and is very much looking forward to welcoming the MRDWC to our Association. MRDA is committed to the growth of Men’s Roller Derby worldwide, hosting playoffs in Europe and North America since 2017. MRDA Champs will be held in Europe in 2020, with plans already in place to ensure that Champs happen outside of North America at least every 3 years.

The MRDA and MRDWC coming together will strengthen the MRDA’s position as the effective International Governing Body for Men’s Roller Derby, representing over 2000 skaters, officials, announcers, administrators and volunteers.
