MRDA Announces the Updated Rule Set for 2015 Season.

The Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) is proud to announce the MRDA-branded Rules of Flat Track Derby.  This release will update the rules released in March of 2014.  This is the 8th generation of the rules and the 4th generation of the MRDA branded rule set since their creation in 2005 by the WFTDA.

The changes, which were approved by WFTDA and Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) member leagues, are primarily focused on routine revisions and updates, to include Publications and clarifications since the last publication. Some of the more significant changes, which were reviewed and developed by the WFTDA Rules Committee with input and guidance from WFTDA and MRDA member leagues, include:

  • Designating the Official Score as that visible to Officials, Skaters, and audience members, including additional clarification to address points awarded in error
  • Adding new language regarding forearm/hand penalties to penalize use of hands/forearms significantly altering opponent position, trajectory, or speed rather than length of contact (to better align with standard of impact)
  • Clarifying language to address the inability to earn both a Jammer Lap Point and Not on the Track point within the same pass
  • Providing the ability for the Head Referee to designate NSOs to call and enforce penalties for which the NSO is in a position to observe such penalties (e.g., removal of safety equipment, penalty box violations), as well as some additional modifications to Official Discretion
  • Allowing for the use of an Official Review to be used for other purposes as needed by the team (such as a timeout) if no review is requested

Some Rules Q&As were also updated as part of the rules release, including Q&As regarding Failed Star Passes and Destruction of the Pack before Pack Speed is Defined.

Updated Standard Practices and Hand Signals will be released by January 1, 2015. As the Appendix A has been changed to display only track specifications, a new document that outlines how to lay a standard track will be released in the coming weeks.

Teams may begin playing under the new rules immediately. All MRDA-sanctioned bouts must be played under the revised rule set starting Jan. 1, 2015.

Visit Mensrollerderbyassociation.com to find the new Rule set.

Roller Derby Associations Sign Collaborative Agreement

Roller Derby Associations Sign Collaborative Agreement

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and the Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) are excited to announce their formal agreement to collaborate and develop a number of areas of joint interest, moving into 2015.

This agreement will foster additional collaboration between the two roller derby governing bodies in the areas of rules development, safety guidelines, officials certification, tournament dates and other games- related systems. The associations have committed to sharing resources, reducing duplicative efforts, and aligning organizational systems when possible.

The organizations already have an existing agreement in the area of rules. MRDA member leagues have always skated under the Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby, developed by the WFTDA. In 2013, the WFTDA added a MRDA representative to its Rules Committee and began producing an MRDA-branded version of the rules. In addition, the WFTDA’s insurance program began enrolling and insuring male skaters in 2012.

“The WFTDA has had a very positive relationship with the MRDA since it was formed, and our organizations share very similar missions and values,” said WFTDA Executive Director Juliana Gonzales. “We believe this agreement will further the efforts of both organizations to foster and develop flat track roller derby around the world.”

“Since its inception, the MRDA has acknowledged that we are building on a solid foundation, which was established by the women and men of the WFTDA, who were the driving force behind the resurgence of our sport,” said MRDA President Graham Espe. “Collaboration on all the key points of this agreement will lessen barriers so that we can all work together toward common goals, while still allowing both the MRDA and WFTDA to represent the individual interests of their respective memberships. We are very excited for what the future holds.”

The WFTDA, founded in 2005, has 243 member leagues and 114 apprentice affiliates spanning Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Europe, North America and South America. MRDA, founded in 2007 as the Men’s Derby Coalition, has 47 member leagues in North America and Europe.

During the period of the initial one-year agreement, the organizations have also committed to examine the best ways for extending membership to leagues that have both a men’s and women’s team under the same business structure.

MRDA Branded Version of the Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby Now Available

New MRDA Branded Version of the Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby Now Available

The Men’s Roller Derby Association in conjunction with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association are proud to announce the newest version of “The Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby.” This is the 7 th revision/update since the shared rule set was first developed in 2005 by the WFTDA.

The changes include routine revisions and updates to include publications and clarifications since the 2013 publication of the rule set. They also reflect a handful of more significant changes to the game, which were beta tested by the roller derby community, reviewed and developed by the WFTDA Rules Committee, and with feedback from WFTDA and MRDA member leagues:

  • Penalty time is reduced to 30 seconds per penalty, in an effort to reduce the impact of penalties (and in particular, power jams) on scores and game outcomes.
  • Direction of Game Play penalties were revised, to bring those penalties in line with the impact spectrum of other contact penalties.
  • The standards for Cutting the Track penalties were tweaked and the Skating Out of Bounds penalty section now includes expanded examples to better describe when actions are penalizable.
  • New language regarding Multi-Player Blocks formalizes the principle that impeding an opponent with an impenetrable wall is illegal. (This does not change the types of actions that may be penalized, but descriptions of such actions were clarified.)
  • Language related to Blocker False Starts has been revised to allow Blockers to yield more simply, without being fully lapped by the pack.
  • Star Passes   now delineate a single point of transfer of both helmet cover and position at the point when the Jammer releases the Star into the Pivot’s grasp.

Teams may begin playing under the new rules immediately. All sanctioned bouts must be played under the revised rule set starting April 1, 2014.
