Roster & Uniform Number Policy Changes

WFTDA has a new roster/uniform number policy in effect now for all of their sanctioned/mock-sanctioned and strength factor challenge games only. (It will go up for a vote in December 2016 as to whether or not it will be enforced in ALL games. ) The new policy removes the ability to have letters in your Charter Roster number, but you can still have them on your uniform if they are 2 inches or smaller.  Numbers on the back now have to be 6 inches (where they were previously 4 inches).
(Arms are still 2 inches).

This was posted to WFTDA originally in November 2014 and circulated via social media and via their forum. Relevant WFTDA threads are available here:

Out of respect for our partnership with WFTDA and in an effort to promote uniformity, MRDA will also be following this policy for **all MRDA sanctioned games (these utilize a team’s charter).** To give our members additional time to conform to this requirement, it will go into effect for our sanctioned games as of  APRIL 1, 2016.

April 1, 2016 and beyond- uniforms will be required to meet these restrictions, or it will effect the sanctioning of your game(s).

Questions and comments may be directed to the MRDA Forum.

WFTDA Announces Suspension of WFTDA Officiating Certification Program Starting June 1

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) will temporarily close its officiating certification system on June 1 to focus exclusively on the transition to the new, unified certification system with the Men’s Roller Derby Association. The WFTDA and MRDA have set a goal to complete the restructure of the program by early to mid 2017.

No Certification reviews will take place during this period to allow the committee to wrap up work from the current program and to focus exclusively on creating a program restructure, as well as developing new processes that fit the needs of the WFTDA’s and MRDA’s membership.
All current WFTDA Officiating Certifications and Endorsements are frozen as of May 1 unless an official is reviewed during the May Certification review cycle.
Freezing Certification and Endorsements as of May 1 also ensures that any officials applying for 2016 WFTDA Playoffs will not be affected by the shutdown.
Certification will no longer accept appeals after May 31, with the exception of applicants from the May review cycle. The deadline for those appeals will be June 10.
Expiring certifications during the shutdown will be extended with a reasonable timeframe in which to re-apply using the new system. Any expired certifications and deadlines to apply using the new system due to this service stoppage will be considered and communicated.
Game evaluations will still be collected for all games played during the shutdown period.
No Certification tests (written or skating assessments) will be collected during this time. Expiration of tests taken just prior to the close of certification will be taken into account in the new system.
We appreciate the support and patience of those who have planned for their certification renewals, advancements, and achievements in 2016. Our system needs to be completely restructured to ensure that we are meeting the goals of the WFTDA, MRDA, and our officials seeking certification. The WFTDA and MRDA Officials Certification team are working hard team is working hard to create this new system and will be providing updates throughout the year on progress. If officials have any questions during this time please contact [email protected] or [email protected].

The 2015 MRDA Championship games will be held in St. Louis MO

February 10, 2015 – The St. Louis Gatekeepers will host the 2015 Men’s Roller Derby Association Championship “River City Rumble.” This fast and heavy-hitting weekend takes place October 17-18, 2015 and will feature the MRDA’s top teams in the end-of-season rankings. Competition for those spots will be especially tough as the MRDA continues its mission of encouraging the growth and development of men’s roller derby. MRDA will start this season with 56 leagues internationally and many more seeking membership this year.

The Gatekeepers will carry on the tradition of great events, and be the first league in MRDA to host this event twice, (the first being in 2012.) The Gatekeepers, founded in November 2009, have grown to become a highly respected organization in men’s roller derby, skill-wise and in sheer number of skaters.

The 2015 MRDA Championship will be held at the Midwest Sport Hockey Complex. Midwest Sport is the premier inline roller hockey facility in the Midwest making it the ideal spot for high-caliber roller derby. And, ample stadium seating will provide a quality spectator experience. The complex is located in beautiful Edgar M. Queeny County Park in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin, just 20 minutes from the city.

Information about the event and becoming involved will be available soon. To stay up to date on the latest details follow the Men’s Roller Derby Association on Facebook.

MRDA Announces the Updated Rule Set for 2015 Season.

The Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) is proud to announce the MRDA-branded Rules of Flat Track Derby.  This release will update the rules released in March of 2014.  This is the 8th generation of the rules and the 4th generation of the MRDA branded rule set since their creation in 2005 by the WFTDA.

The changes, which were approved by WFTDA and Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) member leagues, are primarily focused on routine revisions and updates, to include Publications and clarifications since the last publication. Some of the more significant changes, which were reviewed and developed by the WFTDA Rules Committee with input and guidance from WFTDA and MRDA member leagues, include:

  • Designating the Official Score as that visible to Officials, Skaters, and audience members, including additional clarification to address points awarded in error
  • Adding new language regarding forearm/hand penalties to penalize use of hands/forearms significantly altering opponent position, trajectory, or speed rather than length of contact (to better align with standard of impact)
  • Clarifying language to address the inability to earn both a Jammer Lap Point and Not on the Track point within the same pass
  • Providing the ability for the Head Referee to designate NSOs to call and enforce penalties for which the NSO is in a position to observe such penalties (e.g., removal of safety equipment, penalty box violations), as well as some additional modifications to Official Discretion
  • Allowing for the use of an Official Review to be used for other purposes as needed by the team (such as a timeout) if no review is requested

Some Rules Q&As were also updated as part of the rules release, including Q&As regarding Failed Star Passes and Destruction of the Pack before Pack Speed is Defined.

Updated Standard Practices and Hand Signals will be released by January 1, 2015. As the Appendix A has been changed to display only track specifications, a new document that outlines how to lay a standard track will be released in the coming weeks.

Teams may begin playing under the new rules immediately. All MRDA-sanctioned bouts must be played under the revised rule set starting Jan. 1, 2015.

Visit Mensrollerderbyassociation.com to find the new Rule set.

MRDA to host a Roller Derby Officiating Workshop.

MRDA hosts a Roller Derby Officiating Workshop

The Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a one day roller derby officiating workshop on Friday, August 15, 2014 in Rome, NY.  This workshop occurs just prior to the Mohawk Valley Cup tournament and is a separate event with its own registration.

All officials, skaters and enthusiasts are welcome to attend.  Leading the workshop are experienced officials and instructors including Sugar Daddy, Miss Trial and Lethe L. Ejection.  Our over-arching goal is to help raise the level of officiating quality and consistency from within the community.

Due to the limited timeframe, our prepared materials focus on broad topics, such as the tenets of officiating, understanding the spectrum of impact, identifying action initiators, and how to overcome some of the barriers to effective and efficient communication.  Based on workshop participants’ interest, we will drill down into the details of rules and officiating best practices.

Advance registration fee for the one day workshop is $30.  The link for advance registration is www.linkyy.com/MRDAclinic2014 . Seating is limited to 50 attendees and same day registration, if available, is $50 per person.
